Squadron History

Tusco Composite Squadron 277 of the Civil Air Patrol announces it's 13th anniversary of service to the community.  The modern squadron was founded in 1989, but has a long history of community service to Tuscarawas County.  The Civil Air Patrol is the official Auxiliary of the United States Air Force, which was formed on December 1, 1941.  The local history of the Civil Air Patrol has roots that  date back to January 12, 1942 when the first local squadron was formed.  The first Squadron Commander was Harry Clever, which the local airport is named after.  A sad note in the history is when in January of 1943 the Addie Wendling, Squadron Commander, Edward Early, Adjutant,  and Edward Early Jr., son of Edward Early, all died in a plane crash in Dover while dropping leaflets for the war effort.

More recently the Civil Air Patrol has helped out the local community with the Mineral City water shortage, during the floods of 1996 by gathering important information about the effects of the floods and checking on local residents and helping the citizens of Jackson Township after a devastating tornado. The Civil Air Patrol has served this community both in war and in peace.  This squadron will continue the tradition of serving this and other communities in years to come.
