Maj Eric Coggin, Commander
Group VI Commander Bio
Maj Eric J. Coggin serves as the Commander of Ohio Wing Group VI Headquarters, overseeing the three squadrons of Northwest Ohio, consisting of sixty cadet and senior members, a CAP aircraft, a corporate vehicle, and several unmanned aircraft systems.
Maj Coggin joined the Civil Air Patrol in 2018 as a staff member at Group VI Headquarters, serving as the Aerospace Education Officer and Operations Officer. With the vision of restoring emergency services capabilities to the Northwest Ohio area, he was appointed as commander of the Perrysburg Flight to turn it into the ES training and flying hub for Group VI. As the flight was gaining operational capabilities, he was selected to become the next Ohio Wing Group VI Commander and was appointed as the Group VI Deputy Commander in late 2019. In September 2020, he was appointed as the Commander of Ohio Wing Group VI. Since then, he has continued to oversee and assist the squadrons under Group VI’s command. In addition, Group VI has since established a full operations program and aircrew rotation, ground and urban direction-finding teams, communications capabilities, and more.
Outside of Civil Air Patrol, Maj Coggin is a professional airline pilot with over 13 years of industry experience, 7,000 light hours, two jet type-ratings, as well as FAA Certificated Flight Instructor, Instrument Instructor, and Multiengine Instructor ratings.
Before he began flying for the airlines, Maj Coggin was a flight instructor and check instructor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, his alma mater. He is also a FAA Safety Team Representative (FAASTeam) and is a member of The American Bonanza Society (ABS), Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).
